Part of a portion of a diptych containing four lines of a letter. The first surviving line, of which only the bottoms of letters remain, appears to commence further to the left than the subsequent lines. It is thus likely that it will have been the first line of the message proper if this is the left-hand column of the letter; there may, in fact, be a v-shaped notch in the left edge. The loss of part of the letter m at the end of line 3, where it seems to have overrun the fold, supports this. The author was in command of a cohort and it is possible that he was prefect of an auxiliary unit; alternatively, he might be a legionary centurion (see line 2 note). The recipient is likely to have been a prefect.
