commentary

1. ]r.nus. is followed by a gap of a centimetre before, presumably, the name of the addressee. The initial letter could well be f or possibly c, but the name Sautenus occurs several times in the tablets, see 581.82-3 note. In the name of the sender it is not clear whether there are one or two damaged letters between r and nus. If two, we might have A]rc̣ạnus (for a man of this name see 162.2, 333.1, 603.ii.2, 641.back 3 and 697.1). If one, the name may be Su]rẹnus; a Surenus, who was a centurion, also occurs in 581 (line 102).

2. Veran.[: the recipient of 319 was probably a prefect by the name of Veranius and this could well be the same man.
